Ideal Meet & Greet/Photo Op

Ideal Meet & Greet/Photo Op

If I could sit down with celebrity VIP teams…

This is a topic I have been thinking about for the last few years.  It’s part of the reason for starting this blog.  I never want this page to be a negative place but, rather somewhere to share information, experiences, value etc.  If I could sit down with artist’s and their management teams to give them insight into what fans feel are best VIP practices this is what I would say:

  1. Artists should keep their commitments. It’s one of the things that I think a pop star and his team did wrong earlier this year.  If they didn’t want to do meet and greets anymore that’s fine but, finish the ones that you had committed to, implement rules to meet your needs in the interim and have your team enforce them but, respect that a good portion of your VIP attendees often are paying to travel for the experience.

  1. Don’t do photo assembly lines. I truly wish all artists that did meet and greets would commit to an hour or so of their time depending on the #’s and do it right, treat each person like a human being, say hello, ask their name, ask where they are from (stars may be shocked how far some will travel to see them), have a genuine interaction, then take the photo.  Let’s face it these meet and greets, photo ops, fan trips cost a large sum of money, show the fans you value and respect their time and money by giving them an interaction.  When an artist’s team brags that they did 300 pictures in 16 minutes that truly is disappointing vs a recent event I was at they had about 200 people and they devoted a solid hour or more, it wasn’t rushed and everyone that walked out after was so happy, felt so special and most of all valued.

  1. Make the interactions private. What I have been seeing quite a bit lately is a curtain box created and have thought that is such a great idea.  You can step in, have your interaction and not have 200-300 people watching it.  It helps with your nerves too, nobody wants to feel like they are in a fishbowl it also solves the issue of people taking photos of the entertainer/star as they approach.  It will also help the genuine interaction because then they are not still speaking to the person ahead of you etc.

  1. Make the rules clear, stick to them and let them know what will happen if they violate the rules. If you say don’t take your cell phones out and ask for a selfie and someone does don’t post the photo, if you say don’t hug, kiss and rub all over an artist and people do don’t post the photo.  I would guarantee you would only have to enforce it once and word would travel.  Too many fans will just take liberties, ignore the rules just to achieve their own objective and it truly does spoil the process for others in many cases and it’s disrespectful to the artist.

  1. Post photos in a timely manner. The companies that have them posted same day or in 24 hours always get a WOW for service from me.  VIP Nation events have been crushing it with this service the last year.  All events I have gone to hosted by them they have been up during the show or the next day.   It’s been nice to see many are getting them done quickly lately, people are always so excited to receive them so the faster the better.

  1. Give organic genuine experiences. A few tours recently I have seen many people asking for kisses, hugs etc.  You are putting the stars in an awkward position because if they say no then they can be looked at like they are being a jerk but, people have to realize in most cases you are a stranger or a familiar face in the crowd to the artist.  Would you want a stranger walking up and asking you to kiss them, hug them etc.?  It’s such a better experience when it happens organically and it’s something the artist initiates because it’s genuine and something they truly wanted to do.  On the flip side though as the artist make an effort to say hello, ask someone’s name and go from there.

  1. Please no gum or food in your mouth. I have a few photos with different entertainers with a wad of gum clearly seen in the pic and then recently had an experience where someone was eating a marshmallow.  Again people pay a lot for these experiences, travel long distances and it’s just respectful not to have food/gum in your mouth and seen in the photos.

  1. Respect the time of individuals paying for the VIP experience. Don’t make them arrive 2 hours ahead to just stand in line and don’t leave them in the various elements like extreme heat & cold.  Be organized. Nobody likes to stand around waiting for hours.

For random interactions with stars I always like to see who puts in the extra effort with their fans.  I can say after seeing it many times that Keith Urban is one of the best at this.  Keith will stop and literally do selfies with 40 people and it takes maybe 10 minutes.  Now in these random cases I think it’s fine to do a quick hello, photo and move on you are not paying for it.

I think the stars also need to be careful the way their team is representing them.  At the softball game at CMA fest one of the entertainer’s boyfriend’s came out where fans were lined up after the game and was telling a guy to hurry up and have her car pulled around because she didn’t want to stop for fans.  Another country star I saw three times at CMA fest once on the pink carpet, at Fan Fair X and then out and about and he could not be bothered to take a photo or have an interaction but as soon as a TV camera was on him he changed right away.  I personally will not spend my money, pay to travel, attend a concert of anyone that shows such disregard for fans.  It’s all in how the situation is handled.  Like I said in my CMA Fest blog from Day 3 instead of responding “NAH” to someone, say sorry not today.  Treat people like human beings and they will in turn reward you by devoting their time and spending their hard earned money to support your career.

One star recently said it best you always have to treat each person special because that may be your 1 time ever to meet that person that has supported you and you don’t know what they had to do to be at that show, if they saved for 6 months, flew across the country etc.  Whether it’s a 30 second selfie interaction or a paid meet and greet it’s your chance to make and leave an impression both on the fan and star’s end.  I will always support the ones that care and truly get it because that adds value to the experience.  I also feel we all have to treat them respectfully.

I would love to hear more thoughts on this from those that read the blog…

Until next time,

CMA 2016 Fest Day 4 (Sunday):

#cmafest

Crazy to13445648_10153833284803978_5616360779900839040_n (1) believe the final day was upon us.  What a fun 6 days it had been and I am ready to sign up for next year!  Walking out of the front of the hotel that morning it was like stepping into a sauna.  I cannot say enough you have to hydrate and have a plan to hydrate all day in this weather.  We even used the https://www.jimmyjohns.com/ delivery service.  They would deliver food, water, power aid right to you at the various stages around town.
I was able to meet one of my all-time favorites today, Michael Carter who plays guitar for Luke Bryan.  He is too cute, super sweet and one incredibly talented man.  It was so much fun to finally get to meet him personally.

Tonight’s performers are sure to provide us with an amazing last night!

Line-up includes:

National Anthem: Exile

Little Big Town with special guest Pharrell

Thomas Rhett

Brett Eldredge

Keith Urban

Luke Bryan

13412890_10153834385788978_8426245545096399412_nWhat a night of performances!  Little Big Town is always fantastic live and always worth it to go see.  Brett Eldredge was fabulous, he is so high energy and clearly loves what he does.  Keith and Luke literally would have blown the roof off if the stadium had one!  Keith is such a fantastic live performer, he can play the guitar better than most in the business and is as genuine, humble, kind and down to earth as you can be.   Luke is also a tremendous performer, kind, engaging and has such a great sense of humor.  He brought Keith back out during his set and they had a guitar playing contest.  Luke played an extra-long set which I loved since last year he was cut off after only a few songs by curfew and he really made up for it.

For me personally after seeing the stadium performances who will I spend my money and time to go see when they tour?  I will always go see Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, and Steven Tyler.  I will also add Brett Eldredge, Little Big Town, Cole Swindell, Cassadee Pope, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt, Eric Church, Kelsea Ballerini and Carrie Underwood.  Not saying the others were not good it’s just either my own personal taste in music or from what I saw of them in regards to fan interaction this week. 13406817_10153833864633978_790956255573265332_n

My one regret was not getting to see Charlie Worsham perform.  My schedule never quite lined up to make that happen but, hope to in the near future.

Overall another successful fest!  What would I change for next year?  Little things like give each person that buys a 4 day package their own stadium approved bag, Fan Fair X gives each 4 day pass holder 1 of their top 3 M&G tickets or HGTV Lodge performances and then do a lottery for the rest.

CMA 2016 Fest Day 3 (Saturday):

CMA 2016 Fest Day 3 (Saturday):

#cmafest

#bigmachinebooth

Day 3 we took our time getting up.  Mother Nature really turned up the temps for the last 2 days and was expected to hit close to 100.  I don’t really mind the heat but staying hydrated is a must.  We spent the morning walking around Nashville shopping in some of the boutique stores and then went over to Fan Fair X and shopped at the booths over there.  I really loved this one t-shirt I found Spread Love It’s the Nashville Way.  http://www.project615.org/shop-online/spread-love-nashville

After we unloaded all our shopping fun at the hotel we headed over to listen to some music on some of the other stages including the River Front.  It was a nice relaxing day, enjoying the beautiful weather and fantastic music.

I was very excited for the night’s performers.  The only disappointment of the day was when we saw a country singer/reality TV star, one I had always liked and hoped to meet one day.  There was maybe 20 or so people that were there and someone asked may be get a picture.  The response I thought was one of the rudest I had ever seen “Nah” and left.  Now I will say the lack of desire to get a photo that day could have been due to the news of Christina Grimmie being shot and killed the night before which would absolutely be understandable.  However there is a way to connect with fans, if this individual had said sorry not today or something I think it would have been better received.  I was truly disappointed in this but, it goes to show not everyone is how they appear to be on TV when the camera is on.   Some artists get way too big for their britches, they forget it’s the fans that helped to make their careers flourish and it’s those same fans that devote their time, money and more to see them.

On the opposite spectrum we also saw Cole Swindell that day and he stopped, was gracious and took pics with the handful of people that were around at that time.

The lineup at the stadium for Saturday night was:

National Anthem:  Marshall Tucker Band

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Chris Young with special guest Cassadee Pope

Cole Swindell

Florida Georgia Line

Steven Tyler with special guest Martina McBride

Blake Shelton with special guest The Oak Ridge Boys

One thing many people don’t know is all the performers don’t get paid for playing at CMA Fest because the proceeds go to the CMA Foundation (Music Education Matters).

The lineup again really gave us another fantastic night of performances.  Chris Young and Cassadee Pope sang their duet “Think of Me” and Chris sang the rest of his chart toppers.  Cole Swindell delivered yet another goosebump moment, there is something so special when they put the camera on his face and you see that twinkle in his eye because he is blown away by the moment he is living.  Florida Georgia Line also delivered another upbeat performance.  Steven Tyler came out and crushed it!  He sang one duet with Martina McBride, a few of his songs of his soon to be released country album, a cover to Janis Joplin’s “Piece of my Heart” and a few Aerosmith hits.   There seemed to be mixed reviews the next day but, I personally thought he did a fantastic job and has done a stellar job on his new country album.  Blake also sang some of his biggest hits and welcome The Oak Ridge Boys on stage to sing “Doing it to Country Songs”.

For day three attire, you needed light, airy clothing for this day/night.   I went with clothes from:  http://shop.nordstrom.com/

CMA 2016 Fest Day 1 (Thursday):

CMA 2016 Fest Day 1 (Thursday):

#cmafest

#bigmachinebooth

CMA Fest is one of the events I truly look forward to all year.  I truly feel you get a lot of value for what you pay overall.  I had already been in Nashville for two days at this point but, we transferred over to our hotel that we purchased with the package early in the morning.  We buy our packages each year through www.cmafest4less.com.  Usually I feel you get a good value but, have to say right out of the gate this year when we picked up our package for two I was disappointed with the fact we only received 1 bag even though we paid for 2 packages.  Considering those clear bags probably have a real cost of $2.00 or so to them I thought that was incredibly cheap of the tour company not to provide one per person paid because you need the clear bags to get in the stadium and in past years they did give one per person.

We stayed at Hyatt Place again this year mostly for the convenience.  The hotel is ok, the beds were definitely not very comfortable which I didn’t remember from last year so maybe they changed mattresses but, they did have a fridge which was good that we could stay stocked up on cold water etc.

IMG_3694

First thing we did was head over to the Fan Fair X and were really shocked to see this massive line of people waiting to get in.  We ended up being the last ones allowed in for the Thomas Rhett hopeful line.  We waited nearly 2 hours and none of the hopefuls were able to get pictures because he only allocated an hour and didn’t stay over which is the artist’s discretion.  This is one thing that I truly think CMA fest should change.  I think anyone that buys a 4 day package should be given one meet and greet or entry into the HGTV lodge performances of their choice or even of their top 3 choices.  Their lottery system is all well and good but, after two years I haven’t won other than an overflow drawing for Jamie Lyn Spears.  The hopeful lines to me is where you see truly how much an artist truly cares about meeting the fans.  For example in 2015 I saw Cassadee Pope do all of her winners, her entire hopeful line of over 200 people and then additional people that came up and wanted to meet her, she was there over 3 hours and that was impressive to see.  There is another twosome that I have seen two years in a row not act in a way that values their fans and what their fans truly want.  Last year they would only sign autographs, no photos.  I wasn’t in their line but sitting in the line for Little Big Town I watched all this happen.  A special needs child went up to them and when they were doing the autograph her Mom who was behind the area where you line up tried to snap a few cell phone pictures of her daughter speaking to them and getting her autographs and they saw the mother and stepped out of frame.  This year fans said they had their cell phones taken away until after the autographs were done.  Yes they did say no photos but, in that circumstance was it really hurting anything?  At an event like Fan Fair X why not do photos, in many ways that goes a lot faster than doing autographs and in today’s culture you know that is what most people want that selfie or the photo to share.

13346513_10153826153648978_1179048774751534949_n

We were a little bummed after the first experience of the day but, we headed over to one of my favorite places at CMA Fest the Big Machine Label store.  Big Machine does it right, they are all so kind, they are all about the fan experience and Scott Borchetta and his team just totally rock in my opinion.  We got in line to meet Jennifer Nettles.  We baked in the heat for a good hour as the line in front of us in the store was already pretty long but we had faith it would be well worth it.  Right on time Jennifer pulled up and they brought her into the store and started the process.  Jennifer is an example of a star that does it right.  She actually gave you an autograph if you wanted one and they took a photo on a professional camera and also a Big Machine employee took one on your cell or camera too.  It went quickly and efficiently and she was able to have a genuine interaction without it feeling like a photo assembly line.  Jennifer is truly so incredibly sweet and extremely talented.

13339682_10153821441053978_1881419334411035495_n

After this we were starving so we headed back up to my favorite restaurant (again) in Nashville: http://www.demosrestaurants.com/ because one can never have too much of their amazing Brown Butter Garlic Spaghetti!  You know it’s good when you have someone like me who rarely eats pasta much less an entire plate of it devours it all.

By the time we finished eating we went back to the hotel, freshened up a bit and then it was time to head over to the stadium.  The line-up Thursday night was:

National Anthem:  The Oak Ridge Boys

The Charlie Daniels Band

Kelsea Ballerini

Dierks Bentley with special guest Elle King

Miranda Lambert

Rascal Flatts

Jason Aldean

All the performers were great.  The Charlie Daniels Band had their good friend Randy Travis make a surprise appearance on stage and received a standing ovation.  Kelsea Ballerini is such a powerhouse and her career will continue to soar in my opinion.  Dierks was absolutely fantastic as always, he’s really made a fan out of me the last two years.   I love his new song with Elle King “Different for Girls” and who doesn’t love Drunk on a Plane!  This was my first time seeing Miranda live and she literally brought the house down with some serious sass.  She’s a fantastic performer and absolutely will have to catch her in full concert soon!   Rascal Flatts were also excellent and timeless really, they are true professionals and amazing artists.

Our seats were also better this year.  Still would like to get into the first 5 rows of the Golden Circle one of these years but, we had a great spot on the lower bowl and were sitting around nice people this year which always make this fun!

For day one attire I went with clothes from:  https://factory.jcrew.com/

CMA Fest

Nashville, TN  June 2015

First and foremost, I have traveled often over the years for work and fun and I must say my heart belongs to Nashville, Tennessee. I absolutely love Nashville, with all the activity surrounding CMA Fest the city shined bright, you felt safe, it was clean and everyone was so nice. Fabulous in every way.

I was a CMA Fest virgin and there was a lot to learn to make it the great experience! We booked our trip through TN Express Tours. The package included: 4 nights hotel accommodations, CMA Fest Admission including: reserved seat admission to all Main Stage concerts at LP Field, exclusive access to the Photo Line at LP Field and Riverfront, daily concerts at Riverfront with early admittance and open seating, additional music stages in downtown Nashville, admission to the Music City Center Fan Fair X, ticket delivery to hotel and hotel taxes included). We also added on tickets to the Celebrity Softball Game. I have to say the little touches that the hotel had in our room every day provided a fun unique experience. This photo below is an example.
CMA FEST First Aid

Picture2CMA Fest certainly felt a little overwhelming the first day. There was just so much to do, so much to see, so many concerts to choose from. We went to the Music City Center Fan Fair X when we arrived and tried to learn the ropes so to speak. I do wish that the schedule could either come out earlier or be posted in a more obvious location for newbies like myself. We joined the overflow line for Little Big Town and luckily got chatting with a guy that knew where to find the schedule. I appreciated his help because Craig Wayne Boyd from the Voice was at a booth in the hall at that hour doing a meet and greet and I was able to run over and meet him! The great thing about Fan Fair X is you have great access to big names. Keith Urban was over doing a set on one side of the building while Little Big Town, Florida Georgia Line, Wynonna Judd, etc. were at various locations doing photos or meet and greets. You had to win tickets for most of those opportunities or do what we were doing and sit on the floor in d wait. If the artists had time you got in after the ticket winners. We were lucky and were able to meet Little Big Town, they are all just so darn sweet.

Picture3One comment I would make for the artists is most fans would rather have a photo with you vs. an autograph. While we were waiting in line at Fan Fair X we were watching another duo’s meet and greet, they had said only autographs, no pictures. It was disturbing to see a special needs child go up for her autograph and her Mom was back quite a bit and tried to take a cell phone pic and the artists stepped out of the frame. I don’t want to sling mud at who the duo was but, just a note for artists a photo and kindness goes a long away to fans. Without fans support you wouldn’t be where you are today. That was the only instance of anything like that I saw the entire Fest week, the majority of artists were very kind, very accessible and open to meeting fans. I would like to give props to Cassadee Pope, she stayed at least an hour past the time and made sure everyone in the overflow line was also able to meet her.

Picture4I also learned you have to keep your eyes and ears open not only around the fest but watch social media. We were able to go and meet American Idol Mentor and Producer, Scott Borchetta from Big Label Machine Group, American Idol winner: Nick Fradiani, the Voice’s: Cassadee Pope & Rae-Lynn just by noticing it on social media. They were all the absolute sweetest people and it was such a pleasure to meet them. The staff at the event handled everything in a well organized fashion.

Picture5
The Celebrity Softball Game was hands down one of the highlights for me. The event itself was very entertaining and you had people like Bobby Bones, Eddie from the Bobby Bones show, Bret Michaels, Lauren Alaina, Charles Esten, Chuck Wicks, Deana Carter and more! Most of the celebrities spent time interacting with fans, either before, after or during the event itself in some cases. It was just laid back and fun!

In my 2016 CMA Fest Blog I will include restaurant suggestions. It is crazy busy on the main streets as you can imagine at the Fest but, we were able to find some great places to try that we plan on returning to this year. We found going off normal hours to eat helped a bit. Another area I didn’t plan much for the first year was the various artist Fan Club parties, I hope to be organized on that for this year!

The concerts on the main stage at LP Field were all excellent. It’s such a value for your money to get to see so many amazing artists in those four nights. The lineup included: Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean, Sam Hunt, Little Big Town, Darius Rucker, Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Brett Eldredge, Alan Jackson, Neal McCoy, Rascal Flatts, Cole Swindell, Wynonna Judd, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Antebellum, Oak Ridge Boys, Carrie Underwood, Thomas Rhett, Band Perry, Zac Brown Band and more. I walked away being a fan of many artists after seeing them perform live. Cole Swindell was probably one of the most special moments. I love watching someone truly live their dreams. He has shared that just the year before he was in the stands and that night he just couldn’t believe he was playing the main stage. The glimmer in his eye, excitement in his smile was a goose bumps moment. The one thing that was a bummer was Luke Bryan’s set was cut way too short, rumor was it was due to curfew but, the one thing that should always be a priority is that the main headliners get to play their full time.  There were so many good performers it would take a book to highlight them all. Watching Keith Urban and Eric Church play together live was excellence!

What did this virgin learn for the next year:

  1. It’s going to be HOT bring lots of loose, light clothing and several changes of clothes.
  2. Prepare even more ahead of time, research the fan club parties
  3. Locate the Fan Fair X schedule as early as possible so you don’t miss opportunities
  4. Bring comfortable shoes, you will walk miles in those 4 days
  5. Make the most of every opportunity.

Picture6The highlight for me was meeting Keith Urban. He is one of the kindest musicians I have ever met, he takes time with you, asks your name, he is so sweet and funny. Let alone he is absolutely fantastic in concert and watch his site for this year’s tour because you can now buy packages that include a photo with him!
We will have slightly better seats for this year’s fest.  I am hoping to eventually get down into the main area by the stage one of these years!  Stay tuned for entries on this year’s event in June 2016!

Until next time,

Xoxo
